A solitary duet by Foofwa d'Imobilité lit by Jonathan O’Hear. With Merce Cunningham - as well as John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg - in mind and body.

The word "musing" presupposes several semantic directions. As a name, it offers the following connotations: "daydreaming", "meditation", "reflection", "introspection," and "study," as in "literary study", "musical study or "painting study".

I wish the tone of Musings to be an hommage, in order to share my admiration of Merce's work, to "pay my respects." But to think about Merce's work implies John Cage of course, and to some extent Robert Rauschenberg. These three artists all passed away and are tagged as the three of the most important collaborators for the theater of the second half of the XXth century. I like to think of them as the three princes of Serendip, the princes of the unexpected discoveries.

However, I wanted the piece to be vivifying rather than dismal. It is, above all, a reflection on their work and my purpose was to evoke some of their pieces by adding a variation which could renew their radical ideas, ever so slightly. So this becomes not quotation but a creative and living legacy in some ways.

Le titre "musing" propose plusieurs pistes. En tant que nom, il offre les connotations suivantes: "songerie", d’où l’aspect onirique de la pièce, proposée comme une succession de cinq pensées rêveuses; "méditation", en lien avec le bouddhisme zen, cher à Merce Cunningham et John Cage; "reflexion" sur le travail de Merce, John mais aussi Robert Rauschenberg; "introspection", car plusieurs éléments de la pièce sont inspirés par des évènements personnels; "étude", comme "étude littéraire" sur une œuvre, ici l’héritage de Merce et John, mais aussi comme la forme musicale impliquant exercice et discipline, et la forme picturale, impliquant que ce travail est préparatoire à des développements ultérieurs, et finalement parce que je me veux un continuel étudiant du travail de Merce et John.

Je désire que le ton de la pièce soit celui de l’hommage. Partager mon admiration à Merce et lui "payer mes respects", comme les anglophones le disent. Et travailler sur Merce implique John Cage immédiatement, et tout de suite après, Bob Rauschenberg. Ces trois artistes désormais tous décédés sont historiquement les trois premiers grands collaborateurs de la deuxième moitié du XXème siècle. Ils sont comme les trois princes de Serendip, les princes des découvertes inattendues.

Cependant, je voulais que la pièce soit vivifiante plutôt que funèbre. Elle est avant tout une reflexion sur leur travail. Mon but était d’évoquer certaines de leurs oeuvres et idées radicales mais en y ajoutant un petite variation qui renouvellerait la chose, même de façon infime, et qui rajouterait ma vision des choses. La chorégraphie, la musique et le costume de Musings sont créés dans cet esprit.
